‘Bhai’ means brother and ‘Dooj’ means the second day after the new moon which is a day of celebration. In Hinduism, the day holds special significance into the lives of a brother and a sister.

It is believed that after killing demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who welcomed him by applying a tilak on his forehead. Since then, the day is celebrated as Bhai Dooj.

According to legend, Lord Krishna ordered the Brij people to worship the Govardhan mountain and cows, which made Lord Indra very angry. In his anger, he let loose such a lots of rain that the lives of the citizens of Brij were in danger. To protect the Brij people, Brijwasis, and animals, Lord Krishna then lifted the huge Govardhan mountain with his little finger.

The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and signifies light over darkness.

In joyous celebration of this victory and the return of King Rama, the people of Ayodhya rejoiced by illuminating the kingdom with earthen diyas, distributing sweets and by setting off firecrackers in Celebrations.

The second of the five days of Diwali celebrations that begin with Dhanteras is known as Narak Chaudas, Kali Chaudas, Roop Chaudas, Roop Chaturdashi, Naraka Nivaran Chaturdashi, and Bhoot Chaturdashi. The event is celebrated all over India to commemorate Lord Krishna’s victory over the legendary demon king Narakasura.
While this day is known as Choti Diwali in the northern parts of India, it is known as Tamil Deepavali in Tamil Nadu. In West Bengal, the day is known as Bhoot Chaturdashi, which is observed by lighting 14 diyas to honour a family’s 14 forefathers.

Festivals form an important part our lives. Festivals come in various kinds. Some festivals are cultural, some national and some religious. Despite the various kinds in which they come, they all mean one thing and that is celebration. Dussera is one such festival.

According to Hindu mythology, it is said that Ravana kidnapped Lord Rama’s wife Sita. However, he was killed by Lord Rama and that’s why this festival is celebrated as a victory of good over evil.

Students all over Daksya Academy celebrated Dussera by re-creating scenes from Ramayan and cultural activities.
